
Basic canoeing courses

August 19th and August 21st
The course will be held over two days. You will get to learn canoeing skills in the beautiful scenery of Lake Päijänne. In this course, you will learn the necessary things about canoeing and safety issues for moving around on the water. After the course, you will receive the Meloja1 qualification.
Contents of the Meloja1 basic course:
Schedule: Approximately 5-6 hours/day
Course content:
Gathering on the beach
Date1:
-Demonstration
-Equipment presentation
-Factory presentation
-Review of paddling technique on dry land
-Packing a kayak
-Security issues
-Getting into the water and landing
-Paddling technique on water
-Forward paddling
-Making a raft
-More techniques: Stopping and paddling backwards, steering the kayak by tilting, arc strokes while stationary and moving, using a paddle rudder
-Practice techniques
Take a break at appropriate intervals during the day
Day 2:
-Let's start with a warm-up
-Let's review what we learned yesterday.
-Side kayaking
-Straight arm paddling
-Canoeing trip in the local waters
-Own lunch, e.g. on an island
-We arrive at the starting beach at the end of the day and do fall/rescue drills
During the days, we will talk about, among other things, different canoeing routes, rules on the water, canoeing in the dark, canoeing in the cold, continuing the canoeing hobby, everyone's rights, and upcoming courses.
The content of the days may change slightly depending on circumstances.
At the end of the course you will receive the Meloja1 qualification.

Tue-Wed 12-13 August 9 am-3 pm (Juurikkasaari)
Sat-Sun 16-17 August 10am-4pm (Juurikkasaari)
Tue and Thu 19.8. and 21.8. 4-9 pm (Juurikkasaari)
We reserve the right to make changes to the program.

Equipment:
Participants must have outdoor clothing and footwear suitable for the weather and kayaking, and waterproof spare clothing. We will send a more detailed equipment list to participants in the information letter.
Safety:
If weather conditions (wind strength over 8 m/s) do not allow the safe implementation of the canoeing course, we reserve the right to change and, if necessary, shorten the program or change the date of the course. The canoeing instructor, trained by the Finnish Canoeing and Rowing Association, has a valid EA1 & EA2 card, a tourism safety passport (MaTuPa) and a hygiene passport. The participant must be able to swim.

Price:
€155/person. Price includes kayak and paddling equipment, instruction, and Meloja1 card. Meals during the course are at your own expense.
